SCHUMANN, ROBERT
Autograph letter signed ("Robert Schumann"), about Das Paradies und die Peri, and his past year of illness and depression, 1 December 1845
to the conductor Heinrich Dorn, expressing his delight at hearing (from Johann Verhulst) that Dorn plans to perform the oratorio Das Paradies und die Peri in Cologne, explaining that there is another performance at Elberfeld scheduled for 6 December, for which he has already sent off the orchestral parts, referring him to the publisher Arnold in Elberfeld, if necessary, to see if he can forward them to him or, if not, Arnold could return them so that he can supply them himself; Schumann also reveals how much he would welcome a friendly letter from Dorn, since he has been constantly ill for most of the past year, so it would be doubly appreciated
2 pages, 8vo (c.22.2 x 13.5cm), Dresden, 1 December 1845, remains of mount to left margin
Schumann discusses performances of one of his major orchestral and choral works, but also mentions the extended bouts of illness and depression that afflicted the composer ever since his move to Dresden in December 1844. This was only finally alleviated through his work at this time on the Second Symphony. Heinrich Dorn (1804-1892), who had once taught Schumann counterpoint, was director of the Lower Rhenish Music Festival and conductor of the Gürzenich Orchestra in Cologne. Four days after this letter, Clara gave the first performance of the Piano Concerto op.54 in Dresden.
Arnold wieder an mich zurücksenden möge.
