First separate edition of Ostrovsky's second major play, which had previously appeared in the 1852 issue of Moskvityanin, though the mangling of the text by the censors meant that it did not appear on the stage for another ten years. Ostrovsky became renowned (and reviled) for his realistic approach to theatre, which led him into trouble with the censors on several occasions; this play highlights the situation of poor women who have to marry for money, not love, in order to obtain financial security.
