First separate edition, reprinted from Moskvityanin, issue 5, 1853. Like most of Ostrovsky's plays, it premiered at the Maly ("little") Theatre in Moscow, and shortly afterwards at the Bolshoi Theatre (the cast list for the performance there on 14 January 1853 is printed with the dramatis personae). The lower cover lists other plays by Ostrovsky that were issued by Moskvityanin.
