Description

MONRO, ALEXANDER

Traité d'ostéologie... Première (-seconde) partie. Paris: Guillaume Cavelier, 1759

large folio (543 x 378mm.), engraved vignette on title-pages, engraved initials and headpieces, engraved frontispiece (bound at end of text), 61 (of 62) anatomical engraved plates arranged and numbered in pairs (with an outline plate and a more detailed plate), contemporary calf, lacking the detailed plate I, occasional light staining and tearing, bindings slightly worn and scraped; sold not subject to return

A monumental book of anatomy; the text first appeared in English in 1726, and this is the first illustrated edition. The translation is thought to be by Marie-Geneviève-Charlotte Thirox d'Arconville, a pupil of Jean Joseph Sue, who supervised the illustrations and added explanations. At least some of the plates were designed by Tharsis (or Tarsis) and engraved by Jardinier, Aubert and Gobin.
