An empty binding with stamped portraits of Luther and Melanchthon. [Wittenberg, late sixteenth century]


folio (400 x 280mm.), calf over pasteboard, upper cover with sunken central panel stamp of Luther, signed PD and dated 1579, within a frame composed of arabesque stamps, arabesque cornerpieces within gilt roll-tooled outer borders, lower cover with sunken central panel stamp of Melanchthon, all coloured by hand, spine tooled with gilt fleurs-de-lys and stars, somewhat rubbed and repaired at edges


Paul Droscher (EBDB w004602) was active in Wittenberg from around 1579 to 1601. There is a similar binding on a German Bible printed in Wittenberg in 1584, now in the Royal Collection, which also has both these painted panel stamps.
