"When I see a beautiful woman I see flowers. Its beauty makes me feel intangible, melancholy, love, refreshed, different and reborn. I want to use different colours to express my inner feelings and emotions in my paintings. I've spent all my life painting, to express a sense of freshness just like a new spring. Women, cats, flowers, and birds in my paintings all represent the beauty in that freshness."

Walasse Ting

A Beauty in Her Boudoir: The Flower Thief Recreates a Classic

Walasse Ting was a natural artist. He was self-taught, and he never wanted to be a part of any academic group. His work has faint traces of Henri Matisse's use of colour, Sam Francis's purity, and even Bada Shanren's lines, but Ting resisted pigeonholing and he retained free will in his work. Eat Me, I'm a Fish (Lot 1034) is an excellent representative of his nudes, and the title reveals the artist's light-hearted humour. This rich composition shows the viewer all the classic elements of Walasse Ting's work at a glance. Eat Me, I'm a Fish is the artist's vivid interpretation of everyday life, and the composition is an overt reference to Édouard Manet's masterpiece Olympia. This work could be considered Ting's homage to a modern master, reinterpreting the essence of this classic painting and challenging the earlier artist's greatness. Ting moved to New York in 1958, at the peak of Abstract Expressionism. Eat Me, I'm a Fish shows Ting's freewheeling use of colour and a style that lies between the representational and abstract.
