Walasse Ting roamed all over the world. He was certainly one of the most sensational and beloved Chinese artists in the international art world in the 20th century. A man with a warm and winning personality, Walasse Ting made friends wherever he went, and his rich, colourful life experiences shaped the lively, distinctive style of his paintings. The full colours and matchless brushwork reveal the artist's fascination with, gratitude for, and love of life. He dubbed himself "the Flower Thief" and when he painted, his only concern was spontaneity, imbuing spirit and emotion in his work. He painted ardent praise for the beauty of nature. Beloved by millions, Ting's art has also attracted the attention of important museums around the world. His work is in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Tate Modern, Chengdu Zhi Art Museum and the Hong Kong Museum of Art. Influenced by the abstract expressionism of the New York School, the artist had already reached a realm of complete creative immersion. In Ten miles fly red little flowers (Lot 1033),  the splashes of vibrant neon paint spill across the canvas, as though re-imagining a scene of flowers flying across miles and miles above the ground. Ting often did not insist upon filling up the entire canvas; rather, he intentionally allowed his carefully laid foundation to remain visible. This is an evolved manifestation of the "leaving blank" technique practiced in traditional Chinese painting, constructing a beauty that comes from the union of the dichotomy between real-and-unreal.
