The work is overall in very good condition.

Upon very close inspection, there is a negligible sign of hairline crack near the lower left corner, which appears to be in stable condition.

Examination under UV light reveals small areas of irregular fluorescence at the upper right corner, which do not appear to be signs of restoration.

Extraordinary Years on the Banks of River Seine


In 1958, Chu Teh-Chun's works caught the eye of Henriette Legendre, owner of Galerie Henriette Legendre, and as a result she and her art director Maurice Panier signed an exclusive six-year contract with the artist. From 1958 to 1969, Chu worked in a studio located near Ménilmontant, where he would embark upon his first important abstract period. No. 40, Au bord de la riviere (Lot 1026) was painted in 1959, marking the beginning of this key phase in his career. The work has an extraordinary exhibition history. A label from Galerie Henriette Legendre affixed to the back of the piece is a reminder of Chu's first formal exhibition. The work was shown at the Galerie Musée de Poche in 1978 and at the Musée d'art moderne André Malraux in 1982. In 2010, No. 40, Au bord de la riviere was presented at 'Chu Teh-Chun Retrospective' held at the National Art Museum of China in Beijing. In honour of Chu's 90th birthday, the painting was also shown at the Musée Cernuschi and Pinacothèque de Paris in 2011 and 2013 respectively, attesting to the work's museum quality.

塞納河岸歲月崢嶸


1955年,朱德群到達巴黎,其原意是如師輩林風眠﹑吳大羽般在法國短期發展,親炙全球現代藝術首都之後回國;然而讓藝術家深受鼓舞的,是數百年來大師輩出的巴黎畫壇,接納了他這位來自遙遠東方的新銳藝術家:1958年,朱德群獲得巴黎勒讓特畫廊負責人勒讓特及其藝術總監莫里斯・巴聶賞識,彼此締結長達六年的獨家合作協議,穩定的工作環境讓藝術家得以安心紮根巴黎,自此以至1969年,他搬進位於毗鄰巴黎的梅尼爾蒙當的工作室專心創作,成就其抽象藝術的首個重要時期,並以1969年代表中國參展巴西聖保羅雙年展,並獲得獨立展館之殊榮,標誌此階段之成就高峰;而1959年誕生的《第40號構圖,河岸》(拍品編號1026)即是紀錄此段歷程的重要開端;本作展歷非凡,其畫背貼有巴黎勒讓特畫廊標籤,可知本作見證藝術家正式出道,此後在1978年於巴黎袖珍博物館畫廊展出,1982年於勒阿佛爾馬爾維藝術博物館展出,2010年於北京中國美術館「朱德群回顧展」隆重亮相,誌慶藝術家九十大壽,2011及2013年更於巴黎塞努奇博物館及巴黎畫館展出,乃博物館級朱德群作品。

相較於國立藝專同儕吳冠中與趙無極,朱德群赴法年份稍晚,然而其全面投身抽象繪畫的過程,卻比吳﹑趙迅速,可見其投身前衛創作之勇毅奮進:1956年,初到巴黎的朱德群在巴黎現代藝術博物館透過早逝的俄裔抽象大師德史岱爾回顧展獲得啟迪;德氏善於以色塊組織抽象構圖,同時在畫題與畫面保留一定的具象元素,此點在朱德群早期抽象作品之中亦有所反映。


《第40號構圖,河岸》以蒼翠色調主導畫面,厚重的黛綠與明亮的鉛白色塊彼此交織,組成鋼琴般鏗鏘悅耳的背景;畫面中央部份,藝術家放手施為來自中國書法的飛躍線條,恣意穿梭色塊之間。從本作命題,可以推想藝術家的靈感與蜿蜒橫貫巴黎的塞納河有關;勒讓特畫廊位於巴黎聖日耳曼區瓜尼高街,恰好在塞納河左岸,畫面正中央塔尖般的線條結構,亦讓人聯想到位於塞納河另一端的巴黎最著名風景之一艾菲爾鐵塔。細味本作,畫面至今傳遞著藝術家初到巴黎的悠悠追憶。


《第40號構圖,河岸》以色塊與線條交織組建構圖,尤其是正中央以三角形塔尖式結構佈局的手法,在五﹑六○年代朱德群奠定自己的抽象語言的階段顯得非常關鍵。藝術家此時創作一般都在畫背寫上編號,本作除了稱為《河岸》,亦名為《第40號》;就在本作誕生之前,藝術家即創作了又名為《紅肥綠瘦》的《第39號》,若比較緊接而成的兩幅力作,即可發現《第40號構圖,河岸》與《紅肥綠瘦》雖然一豎一橫,然而兩者尺幅相近,俱以約80 x 115公分的50號畫布創作(這亦是藝術家五○年代抽象油畫的最大尺幅),並且在構圖上都在中央位置以書法線條組構三角形元素,為畫面帶來張力與運動性;稍後於1960年誕生的名作《紅雨村白雲舍》(又名《第53號》),更可見其吸收了《第40號構圖,河岸》的結構與《紅肥綠瘦》之色彩。2010年,北京中國美術館舉行「朱德群回顧展」,展覽畫冊即特意將《河岸》與《紅雨村白雲舍》以相似的排版方式緊接呈現,可見兩者關繫密切,足證《第40號構圖,河岸》在朱德群創作路上舉足輕重之地位。
