Jade bird-form pendants of this type were made during both the Shang and Western Zhou dynasties, with an interesting feature to distinguish between the two periods. The carved lines on Shang bird pendants are usually slanted on both edges; the lines on Western Zhou pendants, on the other hand, are typically slanted only on one edge, a technique called yimianpo (one slanted edge), which is believed to have developed during the late Shang period and became very popular during the Western Zhou dynasty. See related Shang dynasty examples, such as two excavated in Anyang, Henan province in 1953, now in the National Museum of China, Beijing, published in Yang Boda, ed., Zhongguo yuqi quanji [Complete collection of Chinese jades], vol. 1, Shijiazhuang, 2005, nos. 90 and 91; another in the British Museum, London, published in Jessica Rawson, Chinese Jade from the Neolithic to the Qing, London, 1995, pl. 12:27. For Western Zhou examples, see one in the National Museum of China, Beijing, published in Zhongguo guojia bowuguan guancang wenwu yanjiu congshu. Yuqi juan [Studies of the Collection of the National Museum of China. Jade], Shanghai, 2007, pl. 85.
