A BRONZE FIGURE OF A SEATED BODHISATTVA
FIVE DYNASTIES, WUYUE KINGDOM
五代 吳越國 銅菩薩坐像
well cast with the torso erect, the lower half of the body in siddhasana, the proper right hand raised and once holding an attribute, the other lowered with the palm facing up, the hair piled high in a chignon and swept back from the face, a small urna incised above a peaceful and stern facial expression, the body draped in robes with upswept sleeves and a dhoti gathered at the waist, the deity framed by an openwork mandorla surmounted by a seated Buddha above two overlapping floral medallions bordered by patterned rings issuing flames, the bodhisattva seated on a lotus blossom, further raised by a pierced hexafoil tier raised on six paw feet, all supported by a stepped and tiered conforming base terminating in scalloped bracket feet, modern stand, Japanese wood box (6)
Height overall 11½ in., 29.2 cm
The figure's left arm has been reattached with the lower section of the pendent ribbon missing. The attribute once held in the right hand is missing. The underside soldered with a small metal tab for attachment to the stand. The mandorla is slightly loose with a small break to the openwork design on either side. The lotus blossom seat has lost some petals, and three petals are slightly loose and a few have been consolidated. Two petals have been reduced at the tip. The seat plate has a small restored break to the front. The figure and the stand are possibly matched, but are of the same period. Overall with some malachite encrustation to the surface and expected minor wear, consistent with age.
