WANLI MARK AND PERIOD 

明萬曆 青花錦堂富貴圖蓋盒 《大明萬曆年製》款



of circular section supported on a wide foot, the interior divided into a central flower-shaped section encircled by six radiating sections, the exterior of the cover painted in bold tones of underglaze blue with a central medallion enclosing a pair of birds perched on the branches of a blossoming peony tree growing from behind rockwork, with two further birds in flight above, the sides with four cartouches enclosing pairs of birds on the branches of fruiting and flowering trees, reserved on a diaper ground, the box similarly painted, the base inscribed with a six-character mark in underglaze blue within a double circle (2)

Boxes of the same design were also produced in a wucai palette during the Wanli period.
