gelatin silver print, the photographer's '32 bis Rue du Contentin, Paris' copyright stamp [crossed out] and a ‘Documents à rendre à René DAZY / 25, Rue d’Hauteville, 25 / Paris 10 TAL 44-32’ stamp on the reverse, circa 1931

image: 9 ⅜ by 6 ⅝ in. (23.8 by 16.8 cm.)

Please note the colors in the online catalogue illustration may vary depending on screen settings. This rare, early print with a semi-glossy surface, is in generally very good to excellent condition. The following are visible under close examination in raking light: the faintest age-appropriate silvering in the upper left corner; soft creases throughout that do not appear to break the emulsion, including a long diagonal crease in the upper left corner; and deposits of original retouching. The photograph is trimmed to the image, and the edges and corners are worn with attendant intermittent chipping. On the reverse, are small adhesive and paper remnants in each corner. The edges are somewhat darkened. '16021' is written in pencil in an unidentified hand on the reverse. The Kertész studio stamp has been canceled in black ink. The René DAZY stamp is in blue ink. When examined under ultraviolet light, this print does not appear to fluoresce.

"Despite being one of his most-beloved images, Ernest is one of Kertész’s rarest in a vintage print. André Kertész has been one of my favorite art photographers for as long as I have been involved in photography, over 50 years now. We are now proud to represent the Estate." - Alex Novak
