Description
LINCOLN, ABRAHAM
Autograph endorsement signed ("A. Lincoln") as sixteenth President, forwarding a request for a position in the New York Custom House
One column, about 42 words, on a leaf of paper (4 7/8 x 7 1/2 in.; 190 x 123 mm), formerly the integral blank to the applicant's letter to Lincoln (not present); lightly foxed. Matted, framed, and glazed.
One John Dolan wrote to Lincoln seeking employment in the New York Custom House. The President forwarded his somewhat tepid recommendation to Hiram Barney, the Collector of the Port of New York and a staunch supporter of Lincoln: "I do not personally know Mr. Dolan; but as his home is in New-York, if he is known there to be worthy of it I shall be glad if Mr. Barney can give him suitable employment."
