(GUNPOWDER PLOT)

Report of the Gunpowder Plot in Niderlandisher Kriegs-Journal, 1606

Folio (12 1/4 x 8 7/8 in.; 312 x 227 mm). Title-page with a fine engraving of the Gunpowder Plot Conspirators after Crispijn de Passe the Elder; title-page creased and slightly frayed at fore-edge costing a few letters of text. Disbound. The consignor has independently obtained a letter of authenticity from PSA that will accompany the lot.

An exceedingly rare Dutch account of the failed assassination attempt on James I, with a fine title-page engraving of the conspirators. A cabal of English Catholics intended to blow up Parliament 5 November 1605 but the scheme was uncovered and the conspirators were killed resisting arrest or arrested and executed. The title-page engraving depicts the leader of the plot, Robert Catesby, and seven of his fellow conspirators: Guy Fawkes (but here, Guido Fawkes), Thomas Bates, Robert and Thomas Wintour (here, Winter), John and Christopher Wright (here, Wrigt), and Thomas Percy.
