Breaking news of the fall of the Confederate capital in a "stop-press" broadside, one week before Lee's surrender to Grant. The early and brief dispatch from Virginia follows several exultant headlines ("Glorious News! Another Terrific Battle! Richmond Taken! Victory! Victory! Petessburgh [sic] Evacuated"): "A Despatch from Gen. Grant from 8:30 this A.M. says Petersburgh is evacuated. He also thinks Richmond will soon be ours." A second dispatch, datelined simply "Later," continues, "He is rushing on to cut off Lee's retreat. Secretary Stanton telegraphs Gen. Dix that Richmond was occupied by our troops this morning at 8 o'clock."
