Local field printing on the Battle of Antietam. The Battle of Antietam⁠—or the Battle of Sharpsburg—was fought between Confederate General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, and Union General George B. McClellan's Army of the Potomac. The battle was the deadliest in United States military history up to that point, with a combined total of 22,717 fatalities, wounded, or missing.
