The ruins of the castle at Hohenbaden: looking out over the Rhine valley, Baden Baden (Die Burgruine Hohenbaden)

signed with monogram and dated 1889 lower right

oil on canvas

Unframed: 70 by 90.5cm., 27½ by 36¼in.

Framed: 86.5 by 107cm., 34 by 42in.

The canvas is unlined. Ultra-violet light reveals some spots of retouching (primarily in the lower-left quadrant), however over much of the composition old residual varnish layers fluoresce opaquely and unevenly, making the surface difficult to read. There are some areas of hairline craquelure, and the sky has a somewhat abraded appearance (though this appears to have been thinly painted).
