This dramatic sketch was made from the deck of Brett's schooner Viking. The Viking Log contains the following note: ‘Sk of the Start in a v heavy squall.’ It formed the basis for his 1888 Royal Academy exhibition work A Heavy Squall off the Start Lighthouse.
