An observation of this dazzling green work, like nature's most luxuriant Spring, focuses our gaze on the sensual presence of the oil, the ductile material par excellence, full-bodied, shiny and thick with chromatic variation, so different from the matte and uniform water-based paint that we are used to associating with the artist. In Fontana's hands oil paint, that most quintessential material of the history of Western painting, takes on a new iteration. The artist was to execute these paintings from 1961 through to his death in 1968.

It is a very homogeneous series and this investigation that was carried out for almost the entirety of the 1960s in an extremely coherent way. The pasted thickness of this material allowed the artist to literally 'write' on the canvas, finding a handwriting made of pure love for the material itself, unique in its kind. The eroticism imbued by the artist is all in reference to the material, satisfied with itself without need for any external reference.

In the thin and nervous scratched writings and in the craters at the centre of the canvases we find the aesthetic pleasure of the act of creation. The artist seeks by digging in the oil, through an act that does not destroy or alchemically burn like Burri. He rather shapes the thick paint as the sculptor does, kneads it with manual skill and sensuality. The sense of matter prevails over everything and never as in these canvases can we perceive the three-dimensional aesthetic of the sculptor Fontana.

Many critical texts rightly associate the work of the 'Concetti Spaziali' (Spatial Concepts) with the contemporary discoveries of the cosmos, the exhilarating landing on the moon, the charm that Space emanated in those years. On the other hand, however, it seems evident that in this series of oil paintings, the artist has sunk his hands in the raw material of our earthly world, sometimes frightening and mysterious. Never as in these paintings has Fontana revealed his nature as a sculptor, managing to find a synthesis between sculpture and painting.

Just as a potter turns his pot, dirtying his hands and working the wet matter on the lathe, so too Fontana in an act of love and not of destruction, a reconciliatory and seductive, non-warlike act, transforms the matter in his hands. With the energetic intervention of the back of the brush, of his hands and fingers, the artist writes and digs in the oil and through the canvas.

Recall that the eros of Aphrodite is a universal, fickle, solar and invincible force. The same can be said of these spatial concepts, in their bright colour variations that vary from white, to green to pink... Through this aphrodisiac form of seduction Fontana realises a special form of truth, in which a person does not hide and does not reveal himself, but wants to show the other the most beautiful part of himself.

From the passion for life itself to death, the passage is symbolised perhaps by the crater that opens before our gaze, a vortex that attracts us, seduces us and yet frightens us.

It is true that Fontana said that "The discovery of the Cosmos is a new dimension, it is the Infinite: so I puncture this canvas, which was the basis of all the arts and I created an infinite dimension", but it is also true that, as the great poet Giacomo Leopardi wrote, 'The infinite is within us, in superhuman silences where for a little time / the heart does not get lost, in the profound stillness, and the eternal is beyond the hedgerow...'
