As a pioneer of the Groupe Nervia (1928-1938), Antoine Carte – known as Anto Carte – was a versatile artist who distinguished himself in the fields of large-scale painting and scenography. He gradually created a bold pictorial universe with decorative touches, enhanced by stylized shapes and elegant lines, close to the aesthetics of Art Deco.

The audacity of this work lies notably in the originality of the composition and in the choice of perspective, which shifts from a frontal to a low-angle viewpoint. The figure of the foal, which is characteristic of the artist’s style, is the central subject of the composition and is presented in a highly sculptural manner. At rest, the creature does not seem to be concerned by the human presence in the background. In the distance, a gardener is depicted from behind, going about his business and focusing on his work, a key theme in many of Anto Carte’s compositions. The innovative character of this work lies in the particular attention paid to the equine figure, when the artist frequently chose to place the human figure at the forefront of his artistic works. This scene of rural life exudes a serene atmosphere conveyed through the humanism of the figures, which is typical of the artist’s desire to express a wide range of emotions in the face of everyday reality.

Pionnier du groupe Nervia (1928-1938), Antoine Carte – dit Anto Carte – est un artiste pluriel qui s’est illustré aussi bien dans la peinture monumentale que dans la scénographie. Il s’est peu à peu créé un univers pictural audacieux aux accents décoratifs, qui se nourrit de stylisation des volumes et de lignes élégantes, proche de l’esthétique de l’Art Déco.

L’audace de cette œuvre réside notamment dans l’originalité de la mise en scène et dans le choix d’une perspective oscillant entre frontalité et contre-plongée. Caractéristique du style de l’artiste, la figure du poulain, sujet central de la composition, est présenté de manière éminemment sculpturale. A l’arrêt, il ne semble pas se préoccuper de la présence humaine en arrière-plan. Au loin, un jardinier est représenté de dos, vaquant à ses occupations dans une attitude de travail, thème central de nombreuses compositions d’Anto Carte. Le caractère novateur de cette œuvre se situe notamment dans l’attention portée tout d’abord à l’équidé, tandis que l’artiste choisissait fréquemment de mettre la figure humaine au premier plan de son travail artistique. De cette scène de la vie rurale émane une atmosphère sereine, portée par l’humanisme des figures et caractéristique de la volonté de l’artiste de traduire une large palette d’émotions face à la réalité quotidienne.
