The marble profile shows an antique hero looking to the left, a headband is holding back his hair, finely carved in wavy curls forming a fringe on his forehead and covering his neck. The middle-aged man has a mustache and a long beard covering his entire chin. The fine modelling of his face fantastically illustrates the exceptional realism applied by the sculptors of the ancient school: the aquiline nose, the open eyes, the modelling of his ear, the slightly ajar mouth and lips testifie the perfect mastery in the treatment of the marble by Italian sculptors active during the Renaissance and until the 18th century.

The repertoire here is directly drawn from Greek art of the 5th century BCE, which reached the peak of the representation of the human figure thanks to sculptors such as Phidias and Polyclitus. This relief, combining strength of expression with great technical virtuosity, shows a character who could correspond to that of the famous Athenian strategist and statesman Aristide the Just (550-467 BC), if one refers to an engraved portrait in the collections of the British Museum, in London

Le héros antique est représenté de profil regardant vers la gauche, sa tête ceinte d’un bandeau tenant sa chevelure finement sculptée en mèches onduleuses formant une frange et recouvrant une partie de sa nuque. Son âge mûr est souligné par une moustache ainsi qu'une longue barbe couvrant la totalité de son menton. Le visage traité à la manière de l’Antiquité est représentatif de l’exceptionnel réalisme des sculpteurs de cette époque : le nez aquilin, les yeux ouverts, le modelé de l’oreille, la bouche avec les lèvres légèrement entrouvertes. Ces détails témoignent de la parfaite maîtrise des canons antiques dans le modelé du marbre et la représentation des visages par les plus grands sculpteurs actifs en Italie durant la Renaissance et le XVII^e siècle.

Le répertoire est ici directement puisé dans l’art grec du V^e siècle avant notre ère parvenu à l’apogée de la représentation de la figure humaine grâce à des sculpteurs tels que Phidias et Polyclète. Ce relief, alliant à la force d’expression une grande virtuosité technique, montre un personnage qui pourrait correspondre à celui du célèbre stratège et homme d’état athénien Aristide le Juste (550-467 av. J.-C.), si l’on s’en réfère notamment à un portrait gravé conservé dans les collections du British Museum, à Londres.
