Our armchair with its enveloping backrest resting directly on the plinth on the floor evokes examples directly inspired by Antiquity, such as those imagined in his compositions by the painter Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825), who collaborated on several occasions with the Jacob, of whom he was a close friend. His famous painting, The Lictors Bring the Body of His Sons to Brutus, painted in 1789, illustrates in particular three seats with enveloping backrests, which were precisely executed by Georges Jacob. Two of these chairs, very innovative at the time, not to say revolutionary, were part of the Bloch and Delbée Jansen collections.
Another armchair with an enveloping backrest and winged sphinxes attributed to Jacob Frères is reproduced in the catalog of the sale of the Jean Bloch collection, Paris, Palais Galliera, 13 June 1961, lot 108.

Notre fauteuil avec son dossier enveloppant reposant directement sur la plinthe au sol évoque des exemples inspirés directement de l'Antiquité, tel ceux qu’imagina dans ses compositions le peintre Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825), qui collabora à plusieurs reprises avec les Jacob dont il était un ami proche. Sa célèbre toile intitulée Les licteurs rapportent à Brutus le corps de ses fils, peinte en 1789, illustre en particulier trois sièges à dossier enveloppant, qu’il fit précisément exécuter par Georges Jacob. Deux de ces sièges, très novateurs à l’époque, pour ne pas dire révolutionnaires, ont fait partie des collections Bloch et Delbée Jansen.
Un autre fauteuil à dossier enveloppant et sphinges ailées attribué à Jacob Frères est reproduit dans le catalogue de la vente de la collection Jean Bloch, Paris, Palais Galliera, le 13 juin 1961, lot 108.
