These whimsical armchairs follow the structure of late Empire models, although free from the restraint that characterize that period. Based on examples made in the second quarter of the 19th century, possibly in Sicily, this lot, with its imaginative use of sea horse supports precludes the later taste for Venetian grotto furniture. A 19th century pair of this model was sold Christie's London, 19th Century Furniture, Sculpture, Works of Art and Ceramics, 19 March 2008, lot 104.
La structure de ces fauteuils pleins de fantaisie s'inspire avec liberté des modèles de la fin de l'époque Empire, tandis que leur décor emprunte le motif des hippocampes à certaines réalisations, probablement siciliennes, du second quart du XIXe siècle : ils préfigurent en cela le goût vénitien pour le mobilier de grotte. Une paire de fauteuils similaires datant du XIXe siècle a été adjugée chez Christie's à Londres, le 19 mars 2008, lot 104.
