lacquered metal, silver, coquille d’œuf, shagreen

Overall in very good condition. This superb objet d’art combines a variety of colors and mediums which exemplify Sandoz’s unique practice. As pictured in the catalogue photography, the silver surfaces present with some light oxidation and tarnish which can be professionally polished at the client’s discretion. The silver with light surface scratches and scuffing throughout consistent with use, as well as minute indentations to the side edges consistent with use and not visible unless closely inspected. The flat surfaces on the back and underside of the porte-flacon present with some very minor undulation possibly inherent to production. The lacquered metal includes black, red and brown surfaces and present very well overall, with occasional and very minor color variations and occasional wear to the lacquer. The original red shagreen retains its integrity and presents with minor wear throughout as well as occasional areas of minor loss to the edges. The shagreen surfaces on the inside of the piece present with variations in color consistent with age and use, as well as some minor lifting to the edges, not affecting use or functionality. The eggshell pieces retain their original brightness and complex structure and present with rich and textural tones that range from white and off-white to burnt sienna. This piece has been inspected under blacklight and shows no apparent evidence of prior restoration. A truly exquisite object epitomizing the use of sumptuous materials in the Art Deco period.
