Mask of Ludwig van Beethoven

inscribed: BEETHOVEN

partially gilt plaster, mounted on a painted wood board

47 by 50cm., 18½ by 19¾in. overall

Overall the condition is very good, with some wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age. There is wear to the surface of the plaster, including nicks and scratches. There is minor cracking to the plaster where it joins the wood, in particular on the proper right side of the head, and a few pieces of plaster have chipped in this area. This would benefit from being consolidated. There appears to be a very small reattachment to the tip of the top-most laurel leaf on the proper right side, and the opposite leaf has a loss to the gilding at its back, and the material beneath appears in a clay colour. There is rubbing and possible minor denting to the tip of the nose. There is minor stable splitting to the wood, consistent with the material, notably through the titular inscription. There are several small holes and a metal hook for mounting at the back. Some wear and minor chips to the frame.
