Medusenschild (Shield with the Head of Medusa)

painted papier mâché

60.5cm., 23 3/4 in. diameter

Overall the condition is very good. There is minor wear and dirt to the original painted surface and gilding. There are several very minor stable hairline cracks, notably towards the outer edge of the shield, and one vertical and two horizontal such cracks at the top of the shield above Medusa's head. These have some old retouching. There are a few areas on the black of the shield with a greenish hue, notably at the bottom. On the left and right sides of the black of the shield there are areas of retouching in black paint. There is some minor translucent residue below Medusa's chin. There are a few very small chips, including two at the bottom of the gilt frame. There is some stable craquelure on the reverse, which is painted black. There are some translucent residues, possibly glue, at the back. There are small chips to the black paint and plaster fill at the back, revealing the papier mache material in areas including at the top and bottom edges. There is an old mount for hanging on the reverse. There is a faint chalk inscription at the back, which possibly reads 'Rolf'.
