4to (246 x 192mm.), title printed in red and black, woodcut initials, head- and tailpieces, woodcut illustrations, engraved table, with final leaf containing list of books printed for J. Hooke, contemporary speckled calf, gilt fillet border, joints cracked


The second translation into English of Galileo's final work (see lot 205 for the original Italian edition); the first translation was included in Thomas Salusbury's Mathematical Collections, which was mostly destroyed in the Great Fire of London. The translator, Thomas Weston (died 1728), was Flamsteed's assistant before establishing a mathematical school in Greenwich.
