GARRARD, WILLIAM

FIRST EDITION, 4to (185 x 140mm.), black letter, errata leaf at the beginning, 7 folding plates, numerous woodcut illustrations in the text, contemporary vellum, some neat repairs to tears on folding plates, some minor staining and spotting, slight soiling to covers
RARE AT AUCTION AND WITH ALL THE FOLDING PLATES. As noted by ESTC, and as the case in the present copy, leaf L4 is cancelled, with a corresponding gap in pagination, but the text is continuous. Garrard coined the phrase "loop-hole" in this work, in relation to the building of a fortification.
Garrard was a veteran of the Dutch wars, and after his death in 1587 this work was completed and published by Robert Hitchcock, who added an appendix on logistics.
