Description

PROPERTY FROM THE COLLECTION OF LORD AND LADY FAIRHAVEN

A GROUP OF FOUR LANDSCAPE MINIATURES, FRENCH, LATE 18TH CENTURY

comprising: a rectangular miniature of a landscape with figures by classical ruins, traditionally ascribed to P. Patel, ormolu frame; a circular miniature of an Arcadian landscape, traditionally ascribed to J.F. Hué, in a gilt-metal and blue enamel frame; a circular miniature of a landscape with bathers in a pool near a colonnade, attributed to Antoine Pierre Mongin, gilt-metal mount; and a circular miniature of the cascade at Tivoli, gilt-metal mount

10cm., 4 in. wide; 7.9cm., 3⅛in. wide; 8.3cm., 3¼in. wide; 8.2cm., 3¼in. wide

The artist of the second listed miniature has composed a classical landscape that recalls the work of Nicolas Poussin in such works as Landscape with Pyramus and Thisbe, painted in 1651 for Cassiano dal Pozzo (Städel Museum, Frankfurt, inv. no. 1849).

The fanciful arrangement of architectural elements in a wooded setting seen in the third miniature, rendered in a distinctive palette of blue and buff, may also to be found in the larger scale watercolours of Antoine-Pierre Mongin (1761/2–1827).
