The Roman architectural capriccios of Giovanni Paolo Panini (1691–1765), which combined ancient monuments with more contemporary structures, were much sought after by Grand Tourists and collectors. This genre of painting was continued by the next generation of artists, including Hubert Robert (1733–1818) and the anonymous painter of the present work.
