Property from the SØR Rusche Collection is available to view at Sotheby’s, New Bond Street, 13 – 18 September (weekdays 9am – 4.30pm; weekend 12-5pm).

The canvas is unlined, the paint surface is clean and the varnish is clear. There is some frame abrasion along the left edge, and two small spots of discoloured retouching in the upper left corner. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a thick, opaque varnish, underneath which it is difficult to discern much, save for the aforementioned retouchings, as well as further retouchings sparsely scattered along the left and lower margins, and a small spot int he lower right corner of the ledge. The painting is in seemingly very good overall condition.

Please note, Condition 11 of the Conditions of Business for Buyers (Online Only) is not applicable to this lot.

We are grateful to Dr. Fred G. Meijer for proposing an attribution to Jan Frans van Dael, comparing it to a signed painting by the artist which sold at Sotheby's, New York, 22 January 2004, lot 105 (https://rkd.nl/nl/explore/images/119992). He also suggests the vase and pedestal are unfinished, and the background colour to have been added at a later date.
