Condition Report

Property from the SØR Rusche Collection is available to view at Sotheby’s, New Bond Street, 13 – 18 September (weekdays 9am – 4.30pm; weekend 12-5pm).

The canvas is lined. The paint surface is relatively clean, and the varnish is clear and even. A distinct network of craquelure is visible throughout. Inspection under UV light reveals an extensive campaign of retouching in the background to reduce the appearance of the aforementioned craquelure. Further retouchings are found in the sitter's coat, most notably in the darks of the creases at his elbow and in his collar. There are retouchings along two horizontal lines through the center, likely from old stretcher bar marks. The sitter's face seems to remain largely untouched. The painting is in overall fair condition, and it is stable and ready to hang.
