Prof. Cesare Viazzi, Genoa, 1913, for 5000 Lire;
Geiger collection, Berlin;
Ferdinand Edouard, Baron von Stumm (1845-1925), Schloß Rauisch-Holzhausen, Hessen;
Thence by descent.
B. Geiger, Magnasco, Bergamo 1949, p. 158, no. 61, reproduced pl. 34 (as Alessandro Magnasco).
This painting formerly had a pendant, Landscape with a woodcutter, which was exhibited in the Galerie Alfred Flechtheim, Düsseldorf, in May 1920, no. 34 (see Geiger 1949, no. 62).
The figures in the present work show close parallels with those of Alessandro Magnasco, called il Lissandrino, and indeed the painting was first published by Benno Geiger as by Magnasco, who worked as a figure-painter (figurista) for a number of landscape painters including Peruzzini; this was the most frequent and fruitful of his collaborations, with Magnasco's vigorous figures working in perfect harmony with the nervous energy of Peruzzini's landscapes.
We are grateful to Anna Orlando and Dottssa. Fausta Franchini Guelfi for endorsing the attribution following inspection of digital photographs.
