JOSEPH NOLLEKENS (1737-1823)
BUST OF WILLIAM PITT THE YOUNGER (1759-1806)
signed: Nollekens F.1808
marble, on a marble socle
72cm., 28¼in. overall
Overall the condition of the marble is very good, with minor wear and some dirt to the surface consistent with age. There is particular dirt in the crevices. The marble might benefit from professional cleaning. There are a few light abrasions, including to the tip of the nose and the upper lip and to the forehead on the proper left side and to the socle. There are some whitish marks to areas of the drapery at the front. There are some naturally occuring inclusions to the marble, in particular to the proper left shoulder, to the proper left cheek and to the forehead. There is some veining to the marble consistent with the material, including a slightly darker vein going across the proper left shoulder to the back of the neck and a slightly dark vein on the back of the head on the proper left side. The vein to the head has been partially filled. There are a few minor chips to the edge of the truncation.
