(Venice 1802 - 1870)
VENICE, A VIEW OF THE MOLO
signed lower left: [G]rubas
oil on canvas
18¾ by 26¾ in.; 47.6 by 67.9 cm.
The canvas is thinly lined and is stable on its stretcher. The paint layer is stable, with no losses visible, and it reads well beneath an old and slightly yellowed varnish. There are a few faint diagonal lines at the center left in the architecture, possibly to address an old repair, but these are not distracting. Inspection under UV reveals a milky varnish. Scattered spots of retouching are visible in the sky, for example in the upper left and upper right corners, and a thin line of retouching is visible near the center of the upper edge. There are a few broader areas of retouching in sky above architecture at left, and a line of retouching in the sky to left of the tower. There is a thin line of retouching in the lower left, near the arches in the water, and a spot in the lower left corner near the signature. Otherwise, there are small scattered spots and dots of retouching here and there throughout. Offered in a decoratively carved giltwood frame.
