Photographic Portrait, Inscribed by Einstein on the Mat Board, 1934 

Silver gelatin print on linen-textured paper (9¼ x 7 ⅜ in; 235 x 187 mm), mounted on mat board (15 x 11 in; 380 x 280 mm). INSCRIBED BY EINSTEIN "HERR DR. HARRY STEIN MEIN HILFREICHER" ON THE MAT, and signed by the photographer at lower left. Some discoloration to photograph, primarily along edges, mat abraded, discolored, and worn. Matted, framed, and glazed to 17 ½ x 15 ¾ in. 

Dr. Harry Stein was an orthopedic surgeon in New York City, and acted as the Einsteins' private physician for many years (see also lot 17).
