The sale will present works from important private collections including major paintings from the château de Pontchartrain, amongst which are a seascape by Claude-Joseph Vernet and two impressive views of the chateau and the park designed by André Le Nôtre, the landscape architect of King Louis XIV, painted by Pierre-Denis Martin, called Martin des Gobelins. Two other treasures from Pontchartrain are a powerful marble bust of Neptune attributed to the circle of Antoine Coysevox, circa 1700, and an appealing marble group of a Young Faun and a Nymph by Georges Jacquot, exhibited at the 1833 Salon. Other paintings from a French private collection will enhance the sale, with a seducing Allegory of the Generosity by Francesco Furini, and a delicate Young woman at a fountain attributed to François Lemoyne and his workshop. Also featured are an enigmatic and rare work attributed to Antoine Caron and a high quality early copy of the Mona Lisa belonging to contemporary artist Wim Delvoye.
The most important lot of the 19th century section is a rare and impressive panorama of Paris, executed around 1810 by Pierre Prévost. Newly rediscovered, it shows a wonderful view over Paris taken from the Pavillon de Flore and showing all the major monuments of the city.
