Description

  • Perseus freeing Andromeda
  • Signed or bears signature lower right: M.COXY.FE.
  • Oil on panel
  • 106,5 x 76 cm; 42 by 30 in.

Provenance

Anonymous sale, Monaco, Sotheby’s, 26 June 1983, lot 417 (as by Coxcie the Elder).

Condition

The panel has been cradled, and seems to consist of either 5 or 6 planks joined vertically. Tiny paint losses above the dragon, near Andromeda's left foot and in the upper right corner. Some of the joins are noticeable on the front and have been retouched. The painted surface seems to be in a reasonably nice condition. It is covered with a fine and dense craquelure pattern. We can see some retouchings along the vertical joins, and some along the edges. Further restorations in the fleshtones of Andromeda and some discoloured ones in the black rocks. Offered with a plain carved giltwood frame. Please note that Sotheby's does not guarantee the condition of the frame.
