Led by Théo van Rysselberghe’s À l'ombre des pins (Agay) or Sous les pins (Agay) from 1905, Sotheby’s February 2019 Impressionist & Modern Art Day Sale promises a number of important examples of Impressionist and post-Impressionist art by Edgar Degas, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Gustave Loiseau, Pierre Bonnard and Paul Elie Ranson among others.
The sale also features a compelling selection of German and Russian works of art from the collection of Dr. Erika Pohl-Ströher. Highlights of which include an extraordinary abstract landscape, Genfer see mit blauem Berg (Lake Geneva with Blue Mountain), by Alexej von Jawlensky and a rare series of Bauhaus works by Oskar Schlemmer. These are offered alongside a selection of remarkable drawings by Paul Klee, Ludwig Meidner, Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele from various private European collections and an array of works by Pablo Picasso and Marc Chagall, including L’Ecuyère en rose a vibrant example of one of Chagall’s most enduring themes.
The Surrealist offering encompasses a significant array of paintings, works on paper and sculpture by seminal artists of the movement, including notable examples by Salvador Dalí, Man Ray and Joan Miró.
