Ferdinand Bol Biography

Ferdinand Bol (1616-1680) was a Dutch painter active during his nation's Golden Age. Bol was a student of Rembrandt and adopted many aspects of his teacher's style, leading to a number of paintings being mistakenly attributed to Rembrandt before they were discoverd to be the work of Bol. He is best known for his portraits, which are characterized by a dramatic use of light and shadow and a predilection for lavish costuming.
