André Lhote

André Lhote (1885-1962) was a prominent French painter, sculptor and art theorist. Born in Bordeaux, he moved to Paris in 1906 and began submitting work to the Salon d'Automone and Salon des Artistes Indépendants. Lhote’s earlier work showed the influence of the Fauves, yet he most strongly associated with Cubism. In the run-up to the First World War, he was part of Section d’Or, a Cubist association of artists that included Robert Delaunay, Albert Gleizes and Francis Picabia. While Lhote embraced Cubism's geometric simplification, his work also retained a commitment to traditional representation. This balanced approach was evident in his vibrant landscapes, still lifes, and figure paintings. A dedicated teacher, Lhote's writings and lectures extended his impact beyond his own work, shaping aspiring artists' perspectives through his unique blend of classicism and modernism.
