I t’s almost the first Monday of May, which means it’s almost time for The Met Gala. Co-chaired this year by Bad Bunny, Chris Hemsworth, Jennifer Lopez and Zendaya and organized by Vogue’s Anna Wintour, the annual ball held at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art is a star-studded affair featuring the most avant-garde haute couture you’ll see in one place all year.
Inspired by a 1962 short story by British novelist J. G. Ballard about a couple cloistered away in a garden of crystal flowers, the Met Gala’s 2024 theme is “The Garden of Time.” Less fairy tales and more a self-aware performance of decadence, the fête will be a “celebration of clothing and fashion so fragile that it can’t ever be worn again,” according to Vogue. The beauty of the natural world, its fragility and natural decay—these are themes that will be explored in the museum’s spring fashion exhibition, “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.”
While we can expect many celebrities to arrive in bespoke, custom garments that can never be worn again, there will surely be a cascade of brilliant and timeless floral jewelry by Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels and more. Shop garden-inspired, red-carpet-worthy jewelry available to buy now at Sotheby’s.
