French & Company, New York

By Sotheby's

F rench & Company was founded in the mid 19th century and actively supplied robber barons – and the museums they founded – with decorative arts, sculpture and tapestries. In 1968 Martin Zimet, a former Wall Street banker and oilman, bought the firm. His son Henry joined in 1981. Today Henry and Martin buy and (occasionally) sell European Old Master paintings. Their inventory includes wonderful Dutch 17th century still- lifes and French 19th century landscapes. Many museums have been clients. They welcome inquiries and are open by appointment.
