Biography

Mr Sam Shum is a Senior Specialist of the Chinese Works of Art Department, based in Hong Kong. Mr Shum first joined Sotheby's in 1994 and has been instrumental in organising numerous important single-owner sales, including the Eight Treasures from a Private Collection (November 1998), A Quest for Perfection – Important Chinese Porcelain From A Distinguished Asian Family (October 2005), An Important Private Collection of Qing Historical Works of Art (October 2010) as well as successful theme sales including The World of Qianlong (April 2003); Yongzheng – The Age of Harmony and Integrity (April 2015) and The Three Emperors – Imperial Porcelain from the Yidetang Collection (October 2021). 

Since joining Sotheby’s, Mr Shum has made notable contributions to the Department’s business development and expansion. With his expertise focused on Ming and Qing porcelain, Mr Shum has brought to the Department his profound knowledge in the category and the market. Mr Shum has particularly strong relations with Asian collectors and has built an extensive client network. Mr Shum's return to the company in 2026 marks an exciting chapter for Sotheby's and the Chinese Works of Art Department, where his exceptional contributions continue to bring continued excellence and business success to the Department, following a strong year for Asian Art that witnessed record-breaking auction results.
