Biography

Richard Hird is Vice President and International Specialist of the market-leading European Ceramics and Glass Department at Sotheby’s New York. He has 17 years of experience in the Art industry.

Mr Hird joined Sotheby’s London in 2013 as a cataloguer, and later transferred to the New York office to run the department in 2018. Under his tenure in the last five years the department has achieved $50m in aggregate sales taking a 56% market share leadership over the nearest competitor. In 2021, Richard led the landmark sale of the restituted Meissen porcelain collection of Dr Franz and Margarethe Oppenheimer, a white-glove sale, which totaled $15m and set a new world record for an auction in the category. He has acted as Head of Sale across Sotheby’s international offices, most recently in Cologne for The Ehlen Collection - Eine Rheinische Porzellansammlung (2024). He has collaborated on European landmark sales such as The Manny Davidson Collection (2025), The Giordano Collection (2024), Jacques Garcia, Intemporel (2023) and Hôtel Lambert (2022).

Richard started his career in 2008 and spent five years working for Bonhams auction house in London. Prior to joining Bonhams, he earned a First Class Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art and History of Art from Kingston University, London. He is a long-time member of the French Porcelain Society and American Ceramic Circle.
