Biography
Alex Branczik serves as Chairman and Head of Modern and Contemporary Art, Europe and Asia. He joined Sotheby’s in London in 2004 as a specialist in the Contemporary Art department and was appointed Head of Contemporary Art, Europe in 2016. From 2021 to 2024, he was based in Hong Kong, where he served as Chairman and Head of Modern and Contemporary Art, Asia.
Alex has been responsible for numerous landmark sales, including Gerhard Richter’s Abstraktes Bild from the collection of Eric Clapton for $34.2 million in 2012, then a record for a living artist; Zeng Fanzhi’s The Last Supper for $23.3 million in 2013, a record for Chinese contemporary art; Francis Bacon’s Triptych Inspired by the Oresteia of Aeschylus for $84.6 million in 2020; and René Magritte’s L’Empire des Lumières for $79.8 million in 2022, then the most expensive painting sold at auction in Europe.
Prior to joining Sotheby’s, Alex trained as an equity derivatives analyst at UBS Investment Bank. He is fluent in Italian and French, and holds a First-Class Honours degree in Modern Languages and Literature from Pembroke College, Oxford, as well as a Master’s degree with Distinction in Art History from the Courtauld Institute of Art, London.
