Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot

Paris 1796 - 1875 Ville d'Avray

Paysage aux vaches

Signé en bas à droite COROT

Huile sur toile

33 x 55,7 cm ; 13 by 21⅞ in.

After initially training with Achille-Etna Michallon (1796-1822), Corot entered the studio of Jean-Victor Bertin (1767-1842) before undertaking – like most of his contemporaries – a first voyage to Italy in 1825. The landscapes he discovered fascinated him, and he returned many times in subsequent years. Corot began to work ‘en plein air’, making abundant sketches to help him convey not only the beauty of nature before his eyes, but also and above all the impressions he was feeling at that moment.

Landscape on its own became his principal subject. In the present painting, three cows shelter in the shade of a massive oak tree and young birches, on the banks of what appears to be a lake. Although the composition is centred around the animals, in fact it mainly pays homage to the luxuriant vegetation. In shades of green and brown, the colours are applied with broad, fluid brushstrokes, punctuated only by the brighter points of light that give the trees their shape and enhanced by a beautiful luminous quality. The brushstroke is confident and lively, evidence of the artist’s skill and the work’s rapid execution, probably ‘en plein air’.

Corot also takes pains to render the water’s transparency and its subtle reflections with delicate glazing. The sky, with its gradations of blue, is another typical feature of the artist’s palette.

Corot was an innovator in the art of landscape painting but remains a worthy heir to the landscape painters of the Grand Siècle, particularly in terms of his depiction of light and his picturesque subjects, which may be reminiscent of the works of Lorrain (1600-1682) that Corot so admired.

We are grateful to Mrs Claire Lebeau who confirmed the authentication of this work, following first-hand inspection of the original. An authentication letter by Martin Dieterle and Claire Lebeau dated 22 October 2021 will be delivered to the buyer.

The painting will be included in the forthcoming addendum of the 6th Supplément à L'Œuvre de Corot par A. Robaut et Moreau-Nelaton.
