John Ruskin first visited Switzerland in 1833 and he was to return to the country on at least fourteen further occasions. The present drawing, which is rapidly executed with an elegant use of wash, pencil and bodycolour, is reminiscent of Turner’s on-the-spot drawings from his own tours to the Alps and the Swiss lakes. In his writings, Ruskin placed Turner above all other painters and he particularly admired his watercolours of Switzerland.
