Both drawings in this lot date to 1864. The first was drawn on the 28th of April, shortly after Lear had arrived in Crete, having left Corfu following Prince William of Denmark's acceptance of the Greek throne the previous year. Lear was to remain on Crete, which he explored with this manservant Giorgos Kokkalis, until May, whereupon he travelled to England.
Lear drew his view of Noli, a small fishing village to the west of Genoa, on the 19th of December 1864. That winter he had decided to base himself at Nice, France, but in early December he embarked on a sketching tour along the coast to Genoa, Italy, which he reached on the 22nd of the month. He passed Noli twice, once on the 18th of December and again on Boxing Day, the 26th of December. For another drawing of Noli see: Christie's London, 25 April 1995, lot 138 (£4,600).
