Henri Daniel Pierson (1856-1936), Netherlands

Thence by descent

The rounded rectangular form and heavy chased applied strapwork bands of Art Deco foliage that decorate this cigar box are typical of the designs of Albert L. Barney, Tiffany's head silver designer from 1919 until about 1955. It bears particular comparison to a cigar or jewelry box shown by Tiffany in the House of Jewels at the 1939 World's Fair in New York, seen at the front of the case illustrated by John Loring on p. 243 in Magnificent Tiffany Silver.

The initials on the Tiffany box are for Henri D. Pierson, a member of the well-known Dutch banking family, who co-founded Heldring and Pierson bank in 1879 in The Hague. The bank is now part of ABN AMRO and continues to serve as a premier private banking institution based in the Netherlands.
